| The Jorge de Brito collection is an unavoidable subject in the history of Portuguese contemporary art and certainly the most important Portuguese collection of the late 20th century. The Collector’s Eye ![]() “Artworks have their own personality and he who truly loves them must find their natural and rightful destination.” Jorge de Brito The Collection On Saturday, October 22th, 2011, TAJAN will auction over seventy works from the collection of Jorge de Brito. The collection is widely recognized for its exceptional quality and has an estimated value of 9 to 12 million euros. The collection represents several interests: painting, furniture and objets d’art, Asian art (including statues, porcelain and jade). Jorge de Brito’s erudition and taste were the result of a lifelong education that began in childhood under a father with strong ties to all the antiques dealers of his day. A selection of the most significant works from the auction will be exhibited throughout the summer: in Monte Carlo in July and August; in Brussels on october 5th. All the works featured in this exceptional sale will be on display at Tajan in Paris from October 11, 2011 to October 22, 2011 ![]() Maria Helena Vieira da Silva St Fargeau, 1961-1965 Oil on canvas 63¾ X 44⅞ IN. He became a world-class financier, acquiring several banks, which he merged to create Banco Internacional Portugues. At the same time he participated in the first government request for proposals for highway construction and won the bid. Moreover, he owned companies in tourism and agriculture and was also the main shareholder of the insurance providers Bonança and Comercio e Industria. After the revolution of 1974, Jorge de Brito moved to Paris before returning to Portugal in the early 1980s to negotiate his debts to the state and reestablish his banking activities. In parallel, he prepared his candidacy to the presidency of Sport Lisboa e Beneficia. He negotiated the sale of some of his Portuguese artworks to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation as well as the sale of a few foreign pieces. Despite these sales, his collection remained of the highest quality, particularly Vieira da Silva’s works, which he entrusted in the care of the Arpad-Szenes-Vieira da Silva Foundation in 1994. Until his passing in 2006, he continued to sell certain works from his collection, all the while carefully keeping the masterpieces. ![]() Buffalo Jade China, Ming Dynasty, 17th century Estimate: 500 000/700 000€ A Fundamental Portuguese Collection Jorge de Brito loved unique objects, always looking for unique pieces preferably related to Portuguese history. He would fight and win bids at auction against emissaries from Hong Kong sent for Ming porcelain. Beyond painting, his collection included Chinese porcelains, Portuguese vertu, a vast library broadened further by the purchase of that of Commander Ernesto Vilhena, and a wealth of rare gold coins and furniture. This passion resulted in a diverse collection of over 3,000 works, the strongest of which was dedicated to paintings, specifically Baroque, Portuguese nautraliste, and 20th century; the latter representing one of the most extensive and comprehensive collections of works by Júlio Pomar and Maria-Helena Vieira da Silva. ![]() Sonia Delaunay (1885 - 1979) Minho’s market 1, 1916 Estimate : €400,000-600,000 ![]() Julio Pomar Rugby IV, 1968 Acrylic on canvas, Signed dated “Pomar 68” “Rugby IV” on reverse 97 x 130 cm CR vol.I 395 Estimation : 100 000/150 000€ ![]() Montague Dawson Golden Skies – The Tea Clipper “Kaisow” Oil on canvas signed I.I Montageu Dawson 61 x 91,5 cm Estimate : 100 000/150 000€ ![]() Atelier de Jacques II van der Borcht Jupiter et Mercure, vers 1774-1794 Tapisserie laine et soie 321,5 x 243,5 cm Estimate: 30 000/50 000€ For any request, please contact : Julie Ralli Directrice du département Art Contemporain +33 (0)1 53 30 30 55 |
