Contemporary Art Evening Auction Staged alongside London’s celebrated Frieze Art Fair, Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Auction on 13th October will present 47 artworks of exceptional quality and rarity, spanning an era from post-war to present day. Included among the many outstanding highlights to be offered for sale in the Evening Auction is an exceptionally strong School of London group, headlined by three extraordinary early works by Lucian Freud alongside masterly early Frank Auerbach and the most important landscape by Leon Kossoff to come to auction. American Pop is epitomised by works representing two of Andy Warhol’s most recognisable icons: Chairman Mao and Marilyn Monroe, while masterpieces by Miquel Barceló, Peter Doig, Anselm Kiefer, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Chris Ofili and others are testament to the most exciting developments in the art of painting to have taken place over the past thirty years.

Contemporary Art Day Auction The Contemporary Art Day sale, held in London on 14 October, presents an exciting and vibrant offering of works by both new and established artists, featuring a wide variety of Post-War and Contemporary paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs. Coinciding with the high profile and internationally respected Frieze Art Fair, Sotheby’s day sale compliments the fair’s focus on innovative contemporary art, while maintaining its commitment to the sale of the most iconic and sought after works available on the market today. Katy Moran debuts at auction with a voluptuously expressive yet compactly resolved example of her acrylic works on canvas. Moran opens the sale alongside other young artists, work including a delicately saturated work on paper by Hurvin Anderson, two quiet and deeply evocative works from George Shaw’s Scenes from the Passion series, an energetic, spiralling triptych by Aaron Young, and the arresting and engaging work, Study for Negro Sunshine #31, by Glenn Ligon. Also notable are three important and early works by Damien Hirst which were gifted to the current owner by the artist himself: they represent the three iconic series - Spots, Medicine Cabinets and Butterfly Paintings – which define his ouevre. Other highlights include Marc Quinn’s dynamic Pink Sphinx, Banksy’s provocative Bullet Proof David, and an exquisite work on paper by Chris Ofili from his sought after Blue Rider series. Following the unprecedented success of the Duerckheim Collection in June of this year, we are thrilled to offer three exquisitely crafted works on paper by Georg Bazelitz that have never before come to market.  These works, sold in the company of pieces by Sigmar Polke, Neo Rauch, Lucio Fontana, Heinz Mack, Piero Manzoni, and Enrico Castellani among others, together provide collectors with extraordinary choice of exceptional works from the Post-War period.   Finally, we are proud to support the sale of seven works sold to benefit the Kunstverein Hamburg, Germany’s oldest art society. These pieces, including works by Anselm Reyle, Wade Guyton and Douglas Gordon, have been generously donated by a private collector and artists who have been presented at the Kunstverein Hamburg, and are offered to raise essential funds for the continuation of the establishment’s innovative programme.
